In 2013, I chose to study for a Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality and Tourism, without really knowing exactly what the program was about. I only knew one thing: I wanted to travel the world. At 17 years old, that was my one certainty. And studying a degree with international opportunities seemed like the best first step. One of the ways to travel and interact with people from all over the world was through cruises.
How I Discovered Cruises
I remember that in one of the first classes of “Introduction to Hospitality,” we learned about the different types of accommodations: boutique hotels, motels, resorts. And at one point, the teacher mentioned cruises. She said something that stayed with me forever: “A cruise ship is nothing more and nothing less than a floating hotel.” That phrase sparked something in me. I was so fascinated by the idea that I started dreaming about working on one.
Over time, I sent out countless résumés to work for different cruise lines, but I wasn’t selected. My English level was still very basic. After living in the United States and improving my language skills significantly, I tried again: I interviewed with Royal Caribbean and other companies. But then the pandemic hit… and once again, that dream was put on hold.
Today, life has taken me to the other side: I don’t work on cruise ships, but I’ve started selling cruises — and I love it!
